Our story this week comes from a series that ran on the Mutual Broadcasting SystemThe Mysterious Traveler was Written and directed by Robert Arthur and David Kogan. It began on, December 5, 1943, continuing in many different timeslots until September of 1952. The lonely sound of a distant locomotive heralded the arrival of the malevolent narrator (portrayed by Maurice Tarplin), who spoke these words at the beginning of each episode:

This is the Mysterious Traveler, inviting you to join me on another journey into the strange and terrifying. I hope you will enjoy the trip that it will thrill you a little and chill you a little. So settle back, get a good grip on your nerves and be comfortable—if you can!

Cast members included some greats from the golden age of radio. To name just a few: Lon Clark, Wendell Holmes, Bill Johnstone, Joseph Julian, Jan Miner, Ann Shepherd and Bill Zuckert. Sound effects were by Jack Amrhein, Jim Goode, Ron Harper, Walt McDonough and Al Schaffer.

The tale I have picked is called, Fire in the Sky. As you listen try to remember that this one was written in the 50’s and could not possibly happen today. Could it? After all a comet isn’t really a threat. Fire in the sky first aired August 28, 1951.
